Old Fashioned Taffy

  • 2 cups Karo┬« Dark Corn Syrup
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon vinegar
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract


  1. Combine first four ingredients in saucepan.
  2. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly until sugar dissolves.
  3. Continue cooking to hard ball stage (260°F) or until a small amount forms a hard ball when tested in very cold water.
  4. Remove from heat; stir in soda and vanilla. Beat until smooth and creamy.
  5. Pour into buttered pan; let stand until cool enough to handle.
  6. Pull until it has a satin-like finish and is light in color. Pull into long strips 1/2 inch wide.
  7. Cut into 1-inch pieces with a scissors and wrap in wax paper.
  8. For Vanilla Taffy substitute light corn syrup for dark corn syrup. Taffy may be flavored with 1/2 teaspoon flavoring or tinted with 1/4 teaspoon food coloring.
